LIFE INSIDE: A Memoir (Atria Books, 2002; Washington Square Press 2003) is a vivid first-person account of the author's experiences as a rebellious 15-year-old remanded to a psychiatric ward in the late 1960s. The book chronicles the 28 months Ms. Lewis was hospitalized and explores the impact of those years on her adult life, her relationship with her family, the perspectives of former patients and psychiatrists, as well as her unique path of healing, recovery, self-knowledge, and personal growth. "Complex, chilling, luminous: not once false step." - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
