Three poems
Eric Brooks

MONEY

The penny had been sitting
on the stairwell
for three days.
No one yet
desperate enough
to bend down and pick it up.

FRIENDS

I drank enough to make her pretty
and still
she didn’t even say goodbye.
She walked out the door
with the bartender
who had been buying us drinks
all night long.

FAITHFUL

And it’s love
when you’re sitting in a bar
and the girl at the counter
is looking thru you
with eyes that say,
"Come on back to my place."
You look back at her
with eyes that say,
"No, I can’t, but I want to."
Then you take another drink,
look away.
Rise
Go to the can
And while pissing,
look down and say,
"I want to."
and hope that she is still,
still there at the bar.
When you come out
she is gone.
And you say,
"That’s right, I’m faithful."
